Battle Ground, WA

Battle Ground, WA is a medium sized city of Clark County. The city is named for a battle that many feared, but ironically enough, never came to be during the Yakima Indian uprisings of 1855. The city is nestled between the Cascade Mountains and the Pacific Ocean. The city has seven neighborhoods and is the 59th largest community in the state. It is a middle income community compared to federal standards and lower-middle income compared to state standards. It has a mixed workforce and job market featuring white, blue and no-collar positions. It is a semi diverse community in terms of race and ethnicity. The majority of residents commonly identify as either Caucasian or Asian. The four most common ancestries in the city are English, Irish, Dutch and Ukrainian. It is a warm and welcoming community with old world charm conveniently located near big city conveniences.

Before the arrival of settlers, the area was inhabited by indigenous Chinook and Western Klickitat tribes. One of the first settlers to the area was John Tuke and became the first homesteader. However, unlike the older communities in the area like Fort Vancouver, the community of Battle Ground, WA was not really settled until 1886. Early industries included agriculture, diary and timber/logging. Augustus Richter is considered the town’s founder because he platted the town in 1902, the same year the railroad came through. The railroad opened the community up and helped inspire growth in the community. Growth continued at a rather stately pass, but  finally, in June of 1951 the city was incorporated. Today it is a bustling city with a warm atmosphere and countless opportunities for employment, entertainment and education.

Battle Ground spans 7.16 square miles of land area sheltered by the Cascade mountains. In 2010, the population was 17,571, the population density was 2,454.1 people per square mile and the per capita income was $22,301. By 2015, the population was estimated at 17,571, the estimated median household income was $61,915 and the estimated per capita income was $24,038. Further, in 2015 the estimated median house or condo value in the city was $235,848, the mean price on all housing units was $251,013 and the median gross rent was $1,054. Public transportation is available in the form of bus service and used by many residents for their daily commutes. Public education in the city is primarily provided by the schools of the Battle Ground School District, which has approximately seventeen schools. Battle Ground is in the heart of Clark County wine country and features three wineries. The city has an extensive park system including twenty-two parks and miles of trails. The city hosts several events throughout the year like the Harvest Days festival and various other parades, street dances and more that help foster a sense of community togetherness and pride.
